Treating Childhood Neurological Disorders Naturally with Dr. Piper Gibson
When it comes to neurological disorders in our children there is a direct correlation between what we're feeding them, their gut health, and their neurological well being. In this episode we dove deep as I interviewed Dr. Piper Gibson, an extraordinary specialist dedicated to helping children with neurological disorders. Driven by her passion for nutrition and holistic medicine, Dr. Gibson has uncovered transformative insights that are changing lives. This is certainly something you're going to want to check out.
Dr. Gibson's story really began when her vibrant and active six-year-old son was diagnosed with a transient neurological tic. Overnight, his life took a disconcerting turn, and Dr. Gibson embarked on a tireless quest for answers. Despite seeking help from conventional medicine, they were left unsatisfied with the solutions offered. This pivotal moment ignited Dr. Gibson's determination to explore alternative approaches.
As a Doctor of Advanced holistic nutrition today, Dr. Gibson's mission is to challenge preconceived notions of health and wellness. She realized that a complete re-evaluation was necessary, leading her to discover the true path to healing. Dr. Gibson now empowers parents who are committed to making substantial changes in their children's lives. Through her expertise, she equips them with tools, testing, and education to naturally reduce neurological symptoms, with a special focus on tics and Tourette's syndrome.
In my conversation with Dr. Gibson, she shines a spotlight on the misconceptions surrounding healthy eating.
Many believe that incorporating whole grains and moderate amounts of processed foods constitutes a healthy diet. However, Dr. Gibson enlightens us about the importance of embracing real, whole foods—fresh meats, fruits, and vegetables—while resisting the allure of sugary, processed temptations that hinder our well-being.
One of the most eye-opening insights Dr. Gibson shares is the profound impact of gut health on neurological disorders. She brings attention to the fact that most children with such conditions also experience gut-related issues. By prioritizing protein from high-quality sources such as grass-fed beef, wild-caught fish, and pasture-raised chicken, parents can lay a solid foundation for healing. Dr. Gibson explains how protein plays a vital role in breaking down amino acids, producing neurotransmitters, and facilitating the body and brain's healing processes.
Navigating testing for neurological issues can be challenging, as Dr. Gibson acknowledges. Conventional doctors may not always recognize the interconnectedness of neurological problems and gut health. However, she encourages parents to consider food sensitivity testing and seek alternative medical professionals who specialize in holistic approaches. Understanding their child's unique gut health needs can pave the way for personalized interventions.
Food sensitivities can manifest as delayed reactions to certain foods, separate from immediate allergies. While identifying these sensitivities is crucial, it's important to recognize that simply eliminating a specific food might not be enough for effective healing. This episode delves into various healing options, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive approach that considers factors such as gut health, inflammation, and genetics. By understanding these elements, individuals can craft a personalized roadmap to reclaim their well-being.
When addressing health issues related to food sensitivities, it's essential to consider multiple factors. Apart from identifying sensitivities, analyzing stool pathogens, inflammation levels, and environmental toxins plays a critical role. By examining these aspects, a comprehensive understanding of an individual's condition emerges.
While gluten sensitivity is a common trigger, solely removing gluten may not yield optimal results. Identifying other foods that induce gut inflammation is equally important. This includes recognizing which foods, although not highly sensitive, contribute to significant inflammation. Common culprits are gluten, dairy, sugar, eggs, nuts, and nightshades.
Adopting a new dietary approach can be challenging, especially with older children. Parents must consider their child's personality and involve them in the decision-making process. Whether opting for a "rip the band aid off" approach or a more gradual transition, setting goals and providing support along the way is crucial. Engaging the child's commitment and highlighting the benefits of dietary changes can foster long-term adherence.
There's no doubt that diet plays a central role, it's not the sole solution for healing. Integrating additional strategies can optimize outcomes. Understanding an individual's genetic predispositions, including factors like chronic inflammation, glutamate issues, and nutritional deficiencies, can inform tailored interventions. This personalized approach, known as genetic nutrition, aims to support the body and genes for optimal health.
Recognizing that each person's healing journey is unique is vital.
Unfortunately, in our society the desire for quick fixes often overshadows the necessity for personalized approaches. Genetic differences, environmental toxins, and various underlying factors contribute to health issues, making it crucial to explore individualized solutions beyond generic solutions or trends.
In the pursuit of good health, it's crucial to look beyond conventional testing and explore alternative avenues for healing. Testing provides valuable clues, but it's the ability to connect the dots and understand the holistic perspective that truly leads to effective solutions.
Many people rely solely on test results and unquestioningly trust their doctors. However, it's essential to trust your intuition and question medical advice, particularly when dealing with chronic conditions. Mothers, in particular, possess a powerful intuition that should never be overlooked. Though they may face challenges when challenging conventional wisdom, they must realize that their instincts are invaluable in guiding their child's health journey.
Parents navigating the healthcare system for their child's chronic illness often experience overwhelming emotions such as guilt, shame, and grief. They may blame themselves and feel ashamed for not being able to effectively help their child. It's crucial to address these emotions and provide mental and emotional support for both parents and children. Seeking therapy and developing coping skills can make a significant difference in their overall well-being.
Supplements and herbs can play a key role in healing, it's absolutely crucial to prioritize a healthy diet above all else. There is no substitute for a balanced and nourishing diet. However, certain supplements, such as essential fatty acids, can have significant benefits for the immune system and reduce inflammation. Dr. Gibson also mentions the potential of herbal approaches, including cannabis, which has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties. Other herbs Dr. Gibson uses are berberine to help with gut health and balancing blood sugar, oregano oil and cinnamon bark are great to help underlying infections, and berberine, ginger, and cinnamon bark are great for candida overgrowth.
It's important to be informed about supplementation and it's best to seek guidance rather than relying on random choices.

I asked Dr Gibson if she had one piece of advice for mommas going through what she went through with her son what would it be?
Listen to your gut. Listen to your instinct. If, if your brain and your body and your mama's soul is telling you something's wrong, and this is not the right answer that you're looking for, keep going. And it may not be, you know, the next day that you find a solution or the next day, but listen to that voice. Because so many parents tell me like they just kept listening to that voice, telling 'em something was wrong, and then they found us. So I say as a mom who's struggling, listen to that voice. Don't push it away. It's telling you something really important.
