Herbal First Aid Kit Essentials: Natural Remedies for Cuts, Stings, Burns & More
Tiny emergencies happen all the time. Scrapes, burns, bites, sprains, stomach issues, and those unexpected "whoops" moments when you're out living your life.
In this episode of The Herbalist's Path, we're diving into herbal first aid and the essential remedies to keep on hand so you can handle those moments naturally, effectively, and with confidence.
Having the right herbs nearby can be the difference between panic and calm. Sometimes even the difference between a trip to the ER and staying right where you are.
So let's talk about building your herbal first aid kit.
Why Herbal First Aid Matters
I spent my early adult years as a backpacking guide and wilderness therapist, and one thing that frustrated me about that really cool job was that people were paying me to take them to epic, sacred places. Yet they carried backpacks and camping gear filled with toxic, nasty stuff. Not only was that nasty stuff bad for their bodies, it's bad for our planet.
Cue the seedling of my obsession with herbalism.
It was in those boots, on those trails, that I became determined to get an herbal first aid kit into every outdoor adventure seeker's backpack and camping gear.
Something that was better for them and better for our planet. And after an 18+ year manifestation, I did that, eventually getting my herbal first aid goods into REI and countless natural health stores.
It was, and always has been, about doing better for people and the planet.
So let's dive into the essentials a backpacking guide turned clinical herbalist keeps in her first aid kit.
Plantain: The Ultimate Drawing Herb
Plantain (Plantago spp.) is probably my number one go to herb for first aid. And always the first one I’ll teach any and every child I meet, from 1-104.
Plantain is incredibly effective at:
- Drawing out venom, splinters, and infection
- Soothing bug bites, stings, and irritated skin
- Speeding the healing of cuts, and scrapes
- Cooling the heat from a burn
This is the plant you want for those immediate, on-the-spot situations. And lucky for most of us, it grows almost everywhere. Super accessible, abundant, and so easy to find!
We have a saying around our house, “When in doubt, plantain it out!”
Comfrey for Bruises, Sprains, and Repair
Comfrey (Symphytum spp.) is pretty much a superhero, especially when it comes to things like:
- Sprains and strains
- Bruising
- Repairing broken bones
- Speeding the wound healing process
It’s thanks to the allantoin that comfrey is so good at wound healing. But, you’d best be sure you’ve got some good antimicrobials on hand, or you could end up sealing in some nasty bacteria that could cause a gnarly infection. We don’t want that!
And when it comes to the healing of broken bones, it’s highly recommended you don’t use it until it’s been set by the doc. We don’t want those bones fusing together all wonky and stuff.
That could result in loads of pain through your remaining years. Nobody wants that!
Echinacea for Infection and Wound Care
About those antimicrobials. Betcha didn’t think of Echinacea (Echinacea spp.) right away. But, it really shines as one in an herbal first aid kit
Topically, it helps:
- Fight bacteria, viruses, and fungi
- Prevent infection in open wounds
- It speeds the wound healing process (yup, herb geek speak, that means it’s a vulnerary)
Keeping an echinacea tincture on hand is a wise idea, as you never know when you need it for cleaning wounds, easing a tooth ache, or just boosting the immune system.
Yarrow: Nature’s First Aid for Bleeding
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is an absolute life-saving essential herb to know, especially when you're out in the wild.
It's mind-blowing to watch, as it can:
- Stop bleeding quickly
- Act as an antimicrobial
- Support wound healing
I can't tell you how many times I've used yarrow when out camping with family and friends, and turned what could have been a very scary ER trip into a chill campout where we didn't even have to leave camp. Talk about a win!
Please! Get to know Yarrow!
Herbs for Digestion, Stress, and Shock
First aid isn't just about cuts and scrapes. Sometimes we need help in other ways too. Maybe someone ate something that didn't agree with them, or the stress of an accident has their nervous system freaking out. Freaking out is absolutely NOT what you want to do in an emergency situation, so turning to herbs to keep your cool can be a darn fine idea!
Chamomile is one of my absolute favorites here. It's gentle, it's calming, and so easy to keep on hand. A simple bag of chamomile tea can soothe digestive upset and ease inflammation. If someone's eyes are swollen and puffy from an allergic reaction, wet those chamomile bags and lay them right on there. Though I might keep a tincture around for that quick chill pill in a pinch. It works faster right when you need it most.
Ginger and peppermint are also fantastic to keep on hand for nausea, bloating, and general stomach unhappiness that tends to happen when you're eating camp food and adventure snacks that your gut isn't used to.
And activated charcoal is one of those things that sounds a little intense but is incredibly useful when someone has eaten something their body is not stoked with. Keep some in the kit. You'll be glad it's there.
Simple, effective, affordable herbs.
Other First Aid Essentials to Keep on Hand
Here’s some other essentials you’ll want to keep on hand too. Things like:
- Bentonite clay for drawing out toxins and applying some of the other herbs to specific areas
- Lavender essential oil for burns, stress, and as a powerful antimicrobial
- Arnica for bumps, bruises, sprains, strains, and all the body aches and pains
These will help you feel cool, and calm, and prepared for any of those inevitable whoopsie daisy moments in life!
First Aid Starts With Calm
First aid isn’t just about what you’re using, but also how you respond.
In any emergency, staying calm is critical. When people panic, things escalate quickly. And a panicked mind can not think clearly.
This is where herbs truly shine. Not just for physical healing, but for helping regulate the entire experience.
